How to Write an Informative Essay

In the case of an informative essay, your task is not just to state your opinion, but to provide information and educate your audience on an assigned topic. Informative speech essays are also referred to as the expository essays and their aim is not to persuade the audience to change their viewpoints.
Being informative also presupposes being interesting. At the same time, you can state your opinion on the issue you feel strongly about but not in a persuasive tone.
In general, your informative essay can:

  • Inform the audience about issues they have a hazy idea of
  • Elucidate the importance of something
  • Present a groundbreaking research on a topic
  • Compare thoughts on arguable subjects
  • Provide an analysis on a cause-effect relationship

Sometimes to write your own essay, you may need to analyze and process other informative texts and viewpoints. Keep in mind these rules:

  • It is not obligatory to work with the whole text. Choose a certain, most informative part and work with it.
  • If there is a necessity to express the author’s thoughts, do it, but in a short form and not distorting the facts.
  • You will also need to take care of your informative presentation, which will be comprised of the following passages.

Informative Essay Structure

The structure of an informative essay includes the introductory part, the body, and the conclusion. The prime focus is your topic presence.

Introduction

The aim of the introduction is to present the topic and capture your audience’s attention. Also, it must have the focus sentence for the whole essay. You need to begin your first paragraph with a general idea, which will eventually get more and more specific. Provide some explanation of the key words and terms. You also need to indicate the core points and information that your essay will present. Then, finish with your thesis. As a rule, to write an informative essay thesis, you need to compare viewpoints on an arguable subject or data from different sources on a specific problem.

The Body

The body of your informative essay must give all the necessary information and data to your readers. Use different sources, facts, and expert sayings. Draw an outline that will provide a logical organization of your facts. If a persuasive essay is comprised of one statement for one paragraph and evidence, then, each paragraph should have a specific informative facts line. For instance: if your topic is “Correlation between Cholesterol and Heart Disease”, you must present full and clear data about the reported cases of heart disease, their number, and seriousness of the problem.

Then, explain the research and experiments that make the connection between Cholesterol and Heart Disease possible and present all the arguments against this theory.

The Conclusion

In your conclusion, you should restate the importance of the issue and sum up the facts for and against the main thesis of your topic. For instance, “Now you are more knowledgeable about the elevated blood cholesterol or hypercholesterolemia and that it can be one of the risk factors for myocardial infarction.” Remember that you should never present new information or ideas in the conclusion. The aim of the conclusion is to wrap up your informative essay by summarizing everything.
